Why did the fish climb the ladder?

Link. Why did the fish climb the ladder?
Why did the fish climb the 'ladder'? ... To get to the other side of the river of course! Fish in the Condamine River are now able to swim upstream over Loudoun Weir. The first fish 'ladder' in Queensland is about to start operating and northern river fish will be able to pass through barriers, such as weirs and locks, just like many fish in the Murray River have been doing successfully for some time.

Unlocking No. 5 and 10

October is the month for the re-opening of Lock 5 and Lock 10. After months of closure for repair work, Lock 5 at Paringa in South Australia re-opened last week and Lock 10 will be opening at the end of October. Boats will then once again be able to move up and down the river. The repair work on the lock was necessary maintenance to make sure the locks operate properly. Some parts of the lock had been in place since 1929 so were nearing the end of their useful life.

Balancing Lake Victoria

A 48,000 hectare property is hoped will help with water storage and protecting indigenous heritage. The MDBC recently bought a grazing property in New South Wales to make sure Lake Victoria remains a place for major water storage and to protect the Aboriginal burial sites around the lake.

Community meeting about the Darling River to be held this week! NSW Lower Murray-Darling Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is holding a community forum on Thursday 23 October to discuss how to improve the health of the Darling River and how the CMA can help.

World Wetlands Day Art 2009

Get your pencils, paints and cameras out for next year's World Wetlands Day. A nation-wide art competition for both children and adults is being held to celebrate the day in 2009. Every year on February 2, this international day promotes learning about and care of wetlands. This year's theme is 'Upstream-Downstream: wetlands connect us all'.
